speech on phones without data plans

Hi, I was considering getting the HTC Ozone with Talks. However, it requires a data plan, and I already have a laptop with internet access. However, I'd still like an accessible phone. In your oppinion, what phones work best with Ms/Talks. All the phones that AT&T offers with the Talks discount seem like relatively older models, and the newer phones require a data plan. What is a good phone that I can use, that doesn't need a data plan. I'd rather just pay for the Net per Mb, or is this a ripoff. Any suggestions would be apreciated.

If the older phones work with Talks, and don't require a data plan, why not just get one of those?

I have an o-zone and i love it, Um If you try really hard to explan to the people that you really want an o-zone but can't aford their plans then they mgiht be willing to carpermise with you. I did and got a prity good plan. I have 750 minutes, 5 friends and family, for the prise that Altell was selling it for, 49.99ish? Thenadd on my data and five bucks for my 250 texting, I don't think I will need more then that right now, and then 6 dollars for inserince and I pay around $100. Thats still costly, but if your goign down that root, then why not get a good dill.

I have T-mobile dash AKA the the HTC Excalibur with ms on it and don't have a data plan. I had to pay for one for 6 months but they let me off at 4 months. I was paying $75 for my bill and am now paying about $50 for 500 mins and unlimited nights and weekends and txting. I really think the whole you have to have a data plan thing is so beyond dumb. I don't know about AT&T but verizon forces their customers to have one.

I have a PN820 from Verizon running Mobile Speak Smartphone. Though the phone uses the Windows Mobile operating system and you can browse the web with it I wasn't required to purchase a data plan when I got it in early 2008. That may have changed since then though.

The only way I can think of is to get an unlocked phone. They are more expensive, but then you are not paying for the data plan every month unless you get one. I have AT&T, so not sure how that works on other phone providers.

AT&T now requires a data plan with any phone that has a qwerty keyboard. You can either get a phone without a qwerty keyboard or buy an unlocked phone. I recommend the unlocked phone route myself. You pay more for the phone up front but there's no contract extention or forced data plan to deal with. I just bought an unlocked Nokia N86 and I love it. Good luck.

Hi, thanks for the suggestions. I'll keep those in mind. I'd rather have a newer phone. I'll consider the unlocked phone option. They are kind of pricey though. But I could probably buy one with one paycheck.

Keep in mind that Verizon's phones aren't exactly unlockable. They don't have a sim card to work with, so they rely on firmware, and what's called an ESN number to authenticate with the network. You may need to switch providers for this option to work, or, like Tiff said, pick up an older phone, such as the XV6800, Q9C, or PN820.

Hi, thanks, I'm still thinking the Ozone might be a good option, even if I do have to have the stupid data plan. I really don't want an older phone, don't know why, I'd just like a new one.

Oh crap, that sucks!! I kind of like the X-caliber idea, or I can check At& T's plans, But I think they're comparable to each other. At least, it seems that way. Vorizon, T-mobile and at&t seem to be the best carriers. I've heard crappy things about Sprint, but I've never owned a sprint phone.

About the net on the o-zone, you have to press the right soft key to bring up a minue and then arrow down to the option "go to adrees..." Then click on it and erase all the junk and then type in the address and click left soft button.
